1865 - The steamboat
Sultana exploded on the Mississippi River. An estimated 1,800 of the 2,427 passengers were killed.
1974 - In Leningrad, Russia, 118 people were killed when an Aeroflot flight crashed.
1976 - In St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, 37 people were killed when an American Airlines flight ran off the end of the runway. Fifty-one people survived the incident.
1977 - In Guatemala City, Guatemala, 28 people were killed when an Aviateca crashed due to a maintenance error.
1980 - In Don Muang, Thailand, 40 people died when a Thai Airways flight crashed several miles from Bangkok International Airport. Thirteen people survived the crash.
1999 - In Jhukia, India, a crowded passenger bus crashed into a speeding train killing at least 45 people.
2003 - In Buzzard's Bay, MA, a barge owned by Bouchard Transportation, Inc. leaked about 98,000 gallons of oil into the ocean.
2005 - In Polgahawela, Sri Lanka, 35 people were killed when a passenger train hit a bus at a railroad crossing.
