1950 - U.S. President Truman denounced Senator Joe McCarthy as a saboteur of U.S. foreign policy.

1981 - U.S. President Ronald Reagan was shot and wounded in Washington, DC, by John W. Hinkley Jr. Two police officers and Press Secretary James Brady were also wounded.

2008 - U.S. President George W. Bush threw out the first pitch at the Washington National's new stadium, Nationals Park.

2009 - U.S. President Barack Obama asserted unprecedented government control over the auto industry when he rejected GM and Chrysler's restructuring plans and engineered the ousting of GM's chief exectutive Rick Wagoner.
