1965 - U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson authorized the use of ground troops in combat operations in Vietnam.
1973 - U.S. President Nixon threw out the first pitch of the season at a California Angels game. It was the first time that a U.S. President had performed the ceremonial activity in a city other than Washington, DC.
2005 - In Rome, U.S. President George W. Bush, First Lady Laura Bush, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and former President Clinton and George H.W. Bush viewed the remains of Pope John Paul II.
