U.S. President History 1862 - U.S. President Lincoln wrote a letter in response to Horace Greeley's abolitionist editorial. In the letter Lincoln stated "If I could save the Union without freeing any slave, I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves, I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone, I would also do that" and "I intend no modification of my oft-expressed personal wish that all men everywhere could be free." 1902 - In Hartford, CT, President Theodore Roosevelt became the first president of the United States to ride in an automobile. 1967 - In Washington, DC, the shah of Iran began a two-day visit with U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson. 1973 - Henry Kissinger was named Secretary of State by U.S. President Nixon. Kissinger won the Nobel Peace Prize in the same year. 1990 - U.S. President Bush signed an order for calling reservists to aid in the build up of troops in the Persian Gulf. 1996 - U.S. President Clinton signed legislation that ended guaranteed cash payments to the poor and demanded work from recipients.
