1845 - The seventh president of the United States, Andrew Jackson, died.
1934 - U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, in a message to the U.S. Congress, announced his intention to provide a program for Social Security.
1969 - U.S. President Richard Nixon met with President Thieu of South Vietnam to tell him 25,000 U.S. troops would pull out by August.
1982 - U.S. President Reagan became the first American chief executive to address a joint session of the British Parliament.
1987 - Fawn Hill began testifying in the Iran-Contra hearings.
