1788 - Manuel Lorenzo Justiniano de Zavala y Sáenz was born in Tecoh, Yucatán. He served as the interim vice president of the Republic of Texas under interim President David G. Burnet.

1842 - Sam Houston ordered Alexander Somervell to organize the militia and volunteers and invade Mexico.

1894 - Charles W. DeRyee of Corpus Christi wrote a letter that mentioned the the boll weevil was in Texas. It was the first announcement of the pest in Texas. In 1903, the Texas Legislature offered a $50,000 prize for a way to rid Texas of the boll weevil.

1930 - In Rusk County, Columbus Marion Joiner discovered Daisy Bradford No. 3 in the East Texas oilfield. It was the largest discovered oilfield in the world up to that time.

1954 - Stevie Ray Vaughan was born in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas.

1982 - In Central Orange County, a marker was erected at the site of Kishi Colony to honor Japanese pioneer Kichimatsu Kishi and the settlement he founded.

1991 - Governor Ann Richards proclaimed October 3, 1991, as "Stevie Ray Vaughan Day."

2002 - The Texas Rangers put John Rocker on waivers for the purpose of his unconditional release.
